    Description

McIntosh MR 80 Digital FM Tuner--just serviced--with custom walnut case. Condition is "Used".
Up for your consideration is a
    McIntosh MR80 Digital FM Tuner.
I am the second owner of this fabulous tuner and have used it very lightly. It has been recently serviced here in Chicago by a McIntosh authorized service center called “Just Service.” Included in this auction is a custom-made wooden case tailored just for this tuner.
The tuner is solid state, one of the first departures from McIntosh’s tube tuners. It has many great features:
•Tuning is electronic, not mechanical. Tuning can be done by manual knob turning, auto scanning, or by one of four pre-sets.
•The tuner will accommodate several types of antennas.
    •The tuner is extremely sensitive.
•There are two sets of audio outputs on the rear of the tuner. One that is controlled by the volume control and the other that is not.
•A scope can be connected for precise antenna direction.
•An unswitched power outlet is on the back.
•The electronic scan can be adjusted for sensitivity.
•The muting of hiss between stations can be adjusted.
•You can select between stereo or mono. In the latter position all stations will be monophonic even if they are broadcasting in stereo.
•The speed of the scanning can be adjusted.
•A headphone jack is on the front.
•A filter switch provides automatic stereo noise reduction on weak stations.
This tuner has been recently serviced by a Chicago electronic servicer named “Just Service.” This company has been in existence for many decades and has an excellent reputation. They were or are an authorized McIntosh servicer. On this tuner they performed a major overhaul, including replacing capacitors, cleaning, and alignment. The tuner now performs beautifully. A copy of the service and overhaul invoice will be provided.
A copy of the Owner’s Manual will be provided.
    The
    wooden case
that comes with this tuner is custom-made by me. I am a woodworker and have built this case to the highest standards. While the McIntosh tuners are among the best ever made, their cases were
    junque
. On a competing ebay listing for another MR 80 that comes with the original case, one can see from the back view that the case is made from veneered fiberboard. Fibreboard is glued together sawdust, that is soft and easily dented. That case has not survived decades of use, as the fiberboard has failed to support the veneer against bumps and dents. Also, the large metal grate is a throwback to the tube tuners. The MR 80 does not generate the heat of a tube tuner, and does not need such a large grate.
My custom-made case has grates that match the built-in ventilation system of the tuner. The wood used for the case is birch-faced plywood, which is a higher grade than lumber yard plywood. This birch plywood has no knots. The case has been sturdily assembled and covered with two layers of veneer. The outer veneer is exotic highly figured walnut, which is matched on three sides. The bottom also has walnut veneer. The wooden grates were carefully assembled and glued. The bottom grates are made from solid walnut. The top grate is made from solid ebony. There is an ebony band on the back of the case. The case is made so the tuner can easily slide in and out to expose the top controls. This case is a significant upgrade from what was available from McIntosh when the tuner was made.

Will be double boxed and carefully packed for shipping via UPS.
Whether you live in the city, suburbs or rural, you will pick up many FM stations with this magnificent tuner!
