Precedent is a low production early 1950's mono FM tuner that does not come up for sale very often. Like the Brook 12 amp from this same time. No manufacturer in the 1950s attempted to match this unique design.
Photos cannot capture the time and money REL spent designing the stunning gold faceplate with gold raised letters. The Precdedent lettering pops out from the gold background. REL's product design was decades ahead of any other tube equipment manufactures.
The circuit is built on the inside chassis wall, the tubes all point to the center of the cabinet and the circuit is facing the technician. Keep in mind users have adapted the Scott MPX for use with the Precedent.
Hand soldered circuit construction quality is great. Excellent component choice, wire dressing and a highly experienced soldering technician soldered this circuit. Chain dial tuning - who ever attempted this ?
This is an above average example. There is some cabinet finish wear along the edges of chassis. The cabinet wear does no become objectionable. Simply wear from moving around the radio station or laboratory. The wear is not from being tossed into the back of pickup truck. No dents, no scratches, no stains. The aluminum chassis so no rust. Not many listeners knew of the Precedent, believed in the future of FM and even less could afford it. The faceplate frame shows some minor wear. No problems with delicate glass faceplate. This is the second brown faceplate frame design I have seen on the Precedent. This design has two locating tabs at the top of faceplate and two faceplate channels (L&R) for a mounting bracket that snaps into the frame to secure in place. Tuning meter does not move during tuning but meter needle remains upright. Circuit component issue ?
The sound quality is unique. Great definition with some soft tube quality. Includes Operations Manual, Service Manual (with many schematics) and Sales Brochure.
Seller wants to make sure the buyer know what to expect. REL is 65 years old, with original resistors and capacitors. Seller has made his best effort to provide a working tuner. Tuner appears to have had never been repaired. There are indications the tubes were carefully tested and chosen for the Precedent .All original circuit components. The new owner should have a qualified tube technician to make sure the tuner is working at its best sound quality.
