Description
For your consideration, a vintage Sony FM Stereo Tuner ST-5000FW. I have gone through the unit and tested functionality, so please read on to find out what is working, what needs to be replaced to bring it back to original vintage condition, and what is not working on the unit. The good news...The unit has a wonderful sound and runs in MONO (or AUTO which is MONO), the tuning knob is smooth and continuous, variable and fixed audio outputs are working. Walnut veneered case is in overall good condition with a couple minor chips/scratches to the veneer. Please see photos for cosmetic condition of item offered in this no reserve auction.
Simple replacements...
-The unit's two fuse lamps which light up the faceplate (Stanley 8volt, 0.3amp) need to be replaced (sockets have proper voltage being delivered).
-One light bulb which lights the "Tuning" meter will need to be replaced (I am not sure of the size exactly, but it matches the "Tuner Input" and has ~13v being delivered to the Edison style socket).
-A rubberized foot and machine screw that attaches the case to the walnut veneered cover is missing (the foot could be replaced without adding the machine screw as the unit is very secure in the walnut veneered case with just three of the four screws.
The ugly (maybe)...I was able to get the STEREO mode to work by jumping the "STEREO LIGHT (green line)" on the unit with a 0.5volt AC Power Supply (started low as not to damage the unit while troubleshooting) . This seemed to work because the green line connected to the stereo light runs back to the printed power circuit board where it is tethered to an orange line output which in turn runs to the 12 Element Solid State Filter IF Amplifier. Once the jump was in place the Stereo mode ran just fine, so the issue with the STEREO mode appears to be in the power supply printed circuit card. There is oxidation to the power supply printed circuit card on the underside where the lines are connected (see photo). This is where my troubleshooting stopped as I do not know enough about the circuit and I do not have a wiring diagram for the unit.
Please, please, please take a look through the photos and let me know if you have any questions. I'll include any broken light or fuse lamp I removed while I was checking through the unit.
I'll be shipping the unit via USPS Priority Mail with insurance and proper packaging to make sure it arrives safely to it's proud new owner.
Thanks for reading through this description and please let me know if you have any questions.
